Canada co-hosts first meeting of women foreign ministers

Last week in Montreal, Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland co-hosted, with Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union, the first ever meeting of women foreign ministers.

At the closing press conference Minister Freeland announced the creation of an Ambassador for Women, Peace and Security, as well as $25 million in funding for women, peace and security initiatives.

A call to recognize, protect and support women human rights defenders and women’s movements, signed by over 160 Canadian and international organizations, was released ahead of the meeting and an informal coalition organized a series of side events, including a public panel on Feminist Foreign Policy (Twitter moments summarizing the event are available here and here) and a civil society dialogue.

A statement from the informal organizing coalition, which included WFMC, has also been released following the completion of the meeting.
