Canada, Mali, and what will happen next

According to an article from Canadian Press this month, the United Nations sent a request to Canada in late February to extend the Canadian peacekeeping deployment in Mali. Canada’s current contingent in Mali, of 250 troops and 8 helicopters, has been providing emergency medical evacuations, as well as transporting troops and equipment. They are scheduled to leave at the end of July. Although Romania will take over from Canada, they will not be in place until mid-October.

A peacekeeping ministerial takes place in New York tomorrow, Friday, March 29th.

The Canadians for Peacekeeping project provides monthly updates on Canada’s efforts to live up to the stated commitments to UN peacekeeping.
