Canada should reaffirm support for Landmines Treaty

The U.S. Trump administration’s determined efforts to erode support for international institutions and the rule of law has been widely reported. Earlier this month the President cancelled the Obama Administration’s policy to prohibit United States military forces from employing anti-personnel landmines outside the Korean peninsula.

World Federalists are calling on Canada to publicly reaffirm its support for the Ottawa Mine Ban Treaty (formally known as the Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction).

At the same time, Canada should increase funding for the Landmine Monitor, the civil society-based verification mechanism in support of the Ottawa Treaty, as well as for mine clearance operations and support for de-miners.
