Pitching UNEPS

WFM – Canada Executive Director Fergus Watt provided a presentation on the proposed UN Emergency Peace Service (UNEPS) at a forum in New York on “The UN Security Council – 2020 and 2050.” The forum examined current, near term and longer term changes affecting the Security Council and was organized by the New York international secretariat of the World Federalist Movement – Institute for Global Policy. Over 50 persons attended, including 20 diplomats from UN missions.

The UNEPS is a proposal for a permanent 16,000-strong UN capacity that would allow the UN to deploy more quickly to new peace operations and improve efforts to prevent armed conflict and protect civilians in conflict-affected areas. A recent book discussing the UNEPS proposal, written by WFMC Advisory Board member Peter Langille, is available from Palgrave Press.
