Florencia Gor led the UN2020 Initiative’s efforts earlier this month in Buenos Aires. Argentina, organizing a side event at the United Nations High Level Conference on South-South Cooperation. The side event, sponsored by the governments of Uganda and Uruguay, generated a range of views on the “The Power of South-South Cooperation to Strengthen Multilateralism.” At the Buenos Aires meeting language encouraging civil society support for using the 75th anniversary of the United Nations as an opportunity to strengthen multilateralism was included in the final civil society outcome document.

At the United Nations, PGA Espinosa has appointed two co-facilitators, the ambassadors of Singapore and Iceland, to lead deliberations on the date and modalities for the UN’s 75th anniversary commemoration in 2020. Civil society organizations are campaigning to encourage governments to use the occasion as a Leaders Summit that includes a process of stocktaking and strengthening for the organization.
