The shocking assassination of Charlie Kirk is yet another reminder of the fragility of our shared world. Regardless of political affiliation or ideology, violence against public figures undermines the foundations of democracy. It sends a chilling signal that words, debates, and elections can be replaced by weapons; a dangerous path that history has repeatedly shown leads to instability and fear.

Gun-related violence is not confined to one nation. From school shootings and political assassinations to armed conflicts, the prevalence of weapons continues to erode the promise of peaceful, democratic societies. This is not just a national problem but a global one, requiring international cooperation, stronger safeguards, and a commitment to building institutions that protect humanity from cycles of retaliation and hate.

For the World Federalist Movement Canada, this tragic event underscores why our work matters. A more democratic and effective international system is not an abstract aspiration, it is a necessity. Our principles are rooted in the belief that dialogue, justice, and accountable institutions are the only legitimate tools for resolving conflict. Violence must never be normalized as a political strategy.

At a time when mistrust and division threaten to overshadow cooperation, we must reaffirm our shared humanity and resist the forces that seek to replace debate with bullets. The path forward lies in strengthening democratic values, advancing the rule of law, and committing to a future where disputes are resolved through reason, not violence.

We extend our condolences to all those affected by this act of violence and call on the international community to redouble efforts to build a world where peace and justice prevail.
