Wildfires are not just an environmental issue.

This summer, thousands of people across Greece, France, and Spain have experienced a growing reality: climate change is no longer a distant threat. Record breaking heat and fast moving wildfires have forced evacuations, disrupted tourism, damaged homes and infrastructure, and prompted governments to introduce emergency measures, including outdoor work restrictions to protect public health.

While wildfires are often viewed as environmental disasters, their impacts extend far beyond the forests they consume. They place an enormous amount of pressure on emergency services, they threaten food and water security, disrupt local economies, and increase health risks for vulnerable communities. As extreme weather events become more frequent and intense, governments are increasingly treating climate resilience as an essential part of public safety and long term planning.

The effects are not limited to southern Europe. Wildfire seasons have become longer and more severe in many parts of the world, including Canada, where recent years have demonstrated how quickly fires can affect communities, public health, and critical infrastructure. As climate related disasters grow in scale, international cooperation is becoming increasingly important.  Across Europe, countries are sharing firefighting aircraft (EU Commission), emergency personnel, satellite mapping, and coordinated emergency response capabilities through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism (EU Commission).

Climate change does not recognize national borders, and neither do many of its consequences. Protecting people and ecosystems requires coordinated action that combines environmental stewardship with practical solutions for adaptation and disaster preparedness.
