From 1979 to 1993, Waddell served as an NDP Member of Parliament from British Columbia. He was a BC MLA from 1996 to 2001, spending much of that time as a member of cabinet.
Waddell produced the 2015 documentary The Drop: Why Young People Don’t Vote and published a political memoir in 2018.
Statement from WFMC President Dr Walter Dorn
Ian Waddell was a dedicated world federalist who participated in both national and Vancouver Branch meetings, always expressing his creative mind and his generous heart.
Ian was someone who wanted to make the world a better place and he achieved that. He cared about youth (particularly that they voted) and generations after him will benefit from his work, including his documentary.
Ian wanted to see democracy spread all over the world. He saw democracy as a basic human right that should be cherished and actively promoted. While serving in federal and provincial politics and in our World Federalist Movement, he had both a deep and a cheerful effect on those around him. Despite being deeply concerned about the challenges to our country and our world, Ian always carried a ready smile and a cheerful disposition.
We in WFMC lost one of our greats today.
Ian, good friend and fellow world federalist, rest in peace.
