The year 2020 will mark the 75th anniversary of the United Nations. This provides a much-needed opportunity for system-wide stocktaking, strengthening and renewal. The pillars of the UN and of the Charter – Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development – must be strengthened.
The UN2020 Initiative calls for government leaders and civil society to come together for an anniversary of progress and revitalization for the organization. The UN2020 campaign has been initiated by Civicus, the Stimson Center, the Workable World Trust, and World Federalist Movement – Institute for Global Policy. WFMC acts as the campaign’s secretariat.
The campaign’s website includes suggested core principles and approaches for renewing the UN system, resources, and a Call to Action for organizations and networks. Additionally, the campaign has a mailing list. You can read the latest updates and sign up to receive future updates by email on the website.
In current news, this week the co-chairs of the Ad Hoc Working Group (ADWG) on the Revitalization of the Work of the General Assembly will present their zero draft resolution, which, amongst other things, “calls for timely preparations for the seventy-fifth anniversary of the United Nations.” This is the very beginning of the process on this resolution, which will continue through the summer.
